Tank Unit for the Autozam AZ-1

Postby Chris da Silva » Thu Nov 06, 2025 07:33

Does anyone know which tank unit is used for the Autozam AZ-1 (or Suzuki Cara)? Is it the same unit which is used for the Suzuki Alto perchance?

I'm basing my estimate on the knowledge that as the Autozam was a Suzuki-designed car before it was sold to Mazda (who marketed it under the "Autozam" logo), it would be a logical reasoning that the same unit is used in another Suzuki model.

The tank unit in my AZ-1 is not giving me the correct reading, showing a half-tank reading even when the tank is topped up! I'm guessing that the unit in the tank is now worn out due to age. (The car is a 1993 model!) The AZ-1 was only manufactured between 1992-1994 before it was sold back to Suzuki who remarketed it under the model's name, "Cara", for another year before production finally ended.

Listed on Amayama for the AZ-1:

P10060960 920824 PG6SA -100024 to 24.08.1992 1 Discontinued
P10060960A 920824 - PG6SA 100024- from 24.08.1992 1 Discontinued

See for yourself at https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/epc/mazda-japan/az-1/ASPA01/piping_fuel/4200

Unfortunately, the Cara documentation is not shown on Amayama.

You may be able to get the part refurbished. It is quite likely that rust has attacked the mechanism, especially if the tank has not been kept full, so careful cleaning might restore full operation.

Hello Ian.

Many thanks for your reply.

OK, I'll see what I can do! BTW, I've been looking at an additive which I can use to clean up the fuel system of petrol vehicles. It's called the Petrol Total Fuel System Cleaner made by a company called Penrite.

I'm wondering whether this can work with the AZ-1 - provided, of course, that its tank unit has not gone beyond repair! That could save me the trouble of trying to refurbish the one in the AZ-1.

Has anyone experimented with it? If you have, let me know how it worked out.

Petrol leaves behind a layer of a chemical deposit in the fuel tank when left for some time; so I'm thinking that maybe this Penrite product can dissolve this layer which is causing the float in the tank unit to get stuck and display the wrong reading by the fuel gauge!
