OK, Graham, so I'm dense, but how do you get from "spiel" to "muddy boots" :?:

Methinks that Graham's logic (scary as it is) is as follows:

spiel is taken from the German verb "spielen" to play

when you play football you get muddy boots if the football pitch is soaking wet

any other offers?

Its all to do with troglodytes. In days of old I was a potholer and our happy band were was known as nutters, spelunkers or speil e ose as in speleologists hence muddy boots.

Is warped logic part of Star Trek?

I'm slow today (only today?):
How do you get from soundings to hinterland
and hinterland to buildings?

No Ian you are not slow - my fault trying to do several things at once I read your 'soundings' as 'surroundings' - hence Hinterland.

I've changed mine now and we can all go again. Apologies

Hi Alex
This is the song:

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.
She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog,
And we'd begged her not to go.
But she'd left her medication,
So she stumbled out the door into the snow.
When they found her Christmas mornin',
At the scene of the attack.
There were hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminatin' Claus marks on her back.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now were all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been takin' this so well.
See him in there watchin' football,
Drinkin' beer and playin' cards with cousin Belle.
It's not Christmas without Grandma.
All the family's dressed in black.

And we just can't help but wonder:
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig.
And a blue and silver candle,
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma'swig.
I've warned all my friends and neighbours.
Better watch out for yourselves."
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house, Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Have a lovely Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Canoe goes on water - water polo??????

Postby Ken Malone » Tue Feb 22, 2005 21:03

pretty vague connotation though don't ya think?

Personally I like the ones where the connections involve playing around with the structure of the word - Ian and Alex are particularly good at these.

Well it was only a guess - it's just the only connection I could think of!

Hi all,

It appears you are confused with the association of Canoe to Polo. In fact, it is a form of water sport . Obviously, it is not well known in the U.K The best way to explain it would be to imagine the Royal family playing polo sitting in a canoe instead of riding on a horse. The aim of the game is essentially the same as that of the polo you are familiar with. It uses a volleyball and it is handled by hand, not the paddles. A challenging sport, however heaps of fun.

I hope this clarifies your confusion

Nick :) :)

Thanks - I for one have never heard of this sport - sounds a good laugh though - confusion evaporated :D
Mind U the thought of the 'royals' thrashing about in canoes is almost too much horror to take in one gulp!
