Soft Top ??

Postby Alastair Jacques » Fri May 17, 2002 16:10

Now that the Sun is back :D Its time to take the roof off
But with the Great British Weather you have to carry the Panels in the boot just in case it rains :(

My question to you all is -
Does a Soft Top Panel exist that can be used to replace the 3 Alu Pannels,
This could Concertina up to take less space in the boot. :wavey:

How about replacing the spare with a spray can? This is very common with other sports cars (like the Mercedes SLK). It creates some nice extra luggage space.

Also a rack on the boot does help (even if the original Suzuki rack can only carry up to 5 kg).

Have a look at the German SCORE site Forum http://www.cappo660.de/. The topics are Softtop and Neue Soft-top Infos???? . I gather someone is getting one made, but the expected price is a bit high, at 500 Euros.

Ian is correct. According to the German site a guy named "Klaus" brought his Cappuccino to a softtop specialist. This company is working on a prototype of a softtop right now. As soon as this prototype is done, photos will be shown on the German website.

Still, all those owners of a softtop convertible would love a hardtop. Yet we have a hardtop car and some want softtops ...

SOFT TOP'S ARE NOISY!!

Postby Fatmir Cukovic » Mon May 20, 2002 03:46

Hello All,

I thought I'd just mention this as my brother had a soft top
(NOT A CAPPUCCINO), but just wanted to Ad how loud and annoying the sound is when driving at over 70km's, all you can hear is a flapping noise, so the only way out of that is to really put your stereo up and hope for the best!! I don't know If it happens to all soft-tops, but that is my experience with them.

If the cappuccino came out with a soft top, I wouldn't have purchased it, that is one of the major things that appealed to me was the hard-top convertable.

THANKS

FATMIR

I don't think a good soft top should flat. They may tend to be noisier than a hard top, i'd expect.

Althought it would be nice to be able to change the roof very quickly, i wouldn't spend much money on a soft top personally

What we need is an automatic folding hardtop, like a Peugeot 206cc or Mercedes SLK (best of both worlds - hardtop and quick convert). I suspect it's not the sort of thing you could just knock up for the Cappuccino, however :D

So what was your brother's flapping soft top, Fatmir?

Soft -Top

Postby Fatmir Cukovic » Mon May 20, 2002 05:07

YES!!! YES!!! THAT IS WHAT WE NEED!! You wouldn't see the cappo's selling cheap If they did have a electrical hard-top from factory, but I would say it is possible "If you had the cash" to do it after market!!

I think if the roof was a 2 piece, and a bit thinner then what they are now, they could fold into the back window area, and then the back window would fold itself the way we actually do it manually, but this would be at the touch of a button.

Look at me I'm an Einstein!!! ha ha ha

Hello Mr Prescott,

My brother had a FORD CAPRI XR, with the circle back lights, and that was very noisy after 60-70km's, then he went off and made another mistake and bought a SUZUKI VITARA, and that was worse then the CAPRI. Ohhh and another bad thing about a soft-top's is breaking in to them very easily, and I know that through experience as my brother's VITARA got stolen from our front yard at about 2am one morning, they found it about 3 days later, and guess how the thieves got in? by slicing the plastic back window, and after that my brother bought a SKYLINE, not a bad choice I must say!!

Cheers FATMIR

Well I'd expect a Capri to be noisy!

I often say to people, caps are one of the cheapest modern convertibles you can buy, aside from capri's, but who'd want a Capri!

:o NOT ME! They are like bums, everyones got one!
I think a tonneau cover would be better than a rag roof, for the times you want to just park under a grey sky which might open up while your gone.

True, but what do you do if its pouring when you need to drive off - get wet :(

If you don't mind that, Suzuki do (or did) make a tonneau cover - its very neat, and all the holes for the fittings are already there (cunningly concealed or dual-purpose), but you don't want to know the price

Look forward to hearing the proposed PRICE and availability as soon as you know.

Tonneau Cover

Ian: what do you mean the holes are already there, concealed?

Alastair: try a translation service for the German web site, such as AltaVista Babelfish, for a broken English translation.

OK, well, this is from memory, but there are four studs on the dashboard, just behind the windscreen. These fit into holes which are covered by small circular matching plastic blanks. Fastenings just behind the mirrors - I guess you remove the mirrors, fit the fasteners & replace. Can't remember how the rear attached - I think Alex has got one, perhaps he can say :?: There's even a strap to stop the passenger side flapping if you drive with only the RH half open :!: - it attaches under one of the tunnel trim screws.

Lots of fun with the Babelfish translation, also try http://www.suzuki-w.co.jp/history/lineup.html (Japanese to English)

Hay Ian,

Did you notice that the EA21R cappuccino on that SUZUKI site is an Automatic? That just interested me, as you probably know I've got an Auto, and I've never seen another.

The interior is exactly the same as mine except for the Woodgrain.

Cheers

Fatmir

I remember there was a post somewhere about the Diahatsu copen, which is basically what you've mentioned about a pint sized 660cc, turbo charged 2-seater sports car WITH an electrical folding hard-top.

Unfortunately, its not a Suzuki and its not available yet.

If I can find a picture somewhere, I'll put it up.
