TV License Dilemma

Postby David Regan » Thu Dec 20, 2007 00:54

Hi All,

Does a TV license last for 12 months or simply from 1st Jan to 31st Dec?

Unfortunately you get the full 365 days worth of repeats for your hard earnt beer tokens.

There must be an on-line site for the TV licensing authority to double check.

I pay by Direct Debit (recommended!)

The payments are monthly, six payments before the licence begins, and six after. This means you pay 6 months in advance, which is iniquitous

The license lasts for 12 months from the 1st of whatever month it began.

Aha, so not quite the full 365 then!

I've done mine on-line for the last couple of years.

In Aussie there is no much thing as as a TV Licence. We got rid of it in the 70's as it was demonstrated that policing such a policy actually cost more than the revenue. I do remember having to pay a licence fee in UK to avoid the dreaded van with a detector on the top. Now it sounds very W11 and anti civil liberties.

Thank you for enquiring about the date your TV Licence expires.

In most cases when a TV Licence is renewed, the need for a licence is unbroken and the expiry month of the new licence stays the same. When you applied for your licence in April 2007, it had expired December, 2006 therefore you were issued with a December, 2007 licence.

If there is a reason why the expiry month of your new December, 2008 TV Licence should be different from your old one, please let me know.

ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In other words, you were unlicensed from January to March 2007, but, instead of hauling you up before the beaks, they just charged you for the period. Quite kind really :D

Of course, if you can prove you were out of the country for the period, or didn't have a telly in the house, you can ask for the licence to be dated from April

I must say I really don't like this "we've assumed the worst case regardless of what you wanted and charged you accordingly, and it's up to you to put it right!" sort of attitude we're getting from various authorities these days. Seems to be a general trend, and doubtless the government want it to continue so aren't about to protect the public (whom they serve). Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Actually, I paid for the full license in Dec 2006, moved out of the house in Jan and sent for a refund (which was only £97.00, not £135.50). I bought a new license on my return in April and was charged a further £135.00. I assumed this would last until the following April. WRONG.

It would appear that they have not updated there system. Obviously, they get more money out of people that way!
