I experimented quite a bit with stereo ("3-D") photography many (many) years ago but display technology was just too clunky. I'm still looking forward to more user friendly technoly coming available. The forthcoming development of stereo HD TV may be the answer.
There are things you can do visually with stereo that are just impossible with a flat image. My favourite photo ever that I took at that time was of a castle on top of a cliff seen as a reflection in a rock pool. As a flat image it was just an abstract pattern, but as a stereo image it is possible to differentiate between the rock pool and the reflection... an absolutely magical image.
Now adding motion to that! Mind blowing.
