What you want is an omnifi. hard disk based mp3 system from rockford fosgate, they're going dirt cheap at the moment as they're being discontinued. A friend's got one and it works really well. It also comes with wi-fi, so it will auto update with any new music on your computer when you park up at home!
The only pain will be fitting it, you need to keep your existing head unit, find somewhere to mount the display/control panel (the vertical bit of the dash just above the center console?) and then find somewhere to mount the unit (glove box, under the passenger seat, passenger footwell?).

I'm not comfortable with wi-fi Ed - there's too many security implications for my liking - or am I just a tad over-cautious?? 8)

Perfectly sensible I'd say - my little Sukie already does what she wants, the last thing I want is her choosing her own music too!!

Depends how securely you set it up :)

Surely there is only so much you can do to protect yourself - if you block too much then it won't download from your PC properly?? And if you DON'T block then it's a security risk?

So, to sum up, much easier to stick with an MP3/WMA head unit then

I picked up a bargain on ebay just after buying my Cappuccino, it's a mini disc player with CD changer as well. As one of my previous cars had a mini disc player I've loads of my music on them already so I can get by with just that but if I want to play Cds I've got the cable rigged so I can plug the changer in and I have it on the parcel shelf

You don't have to have the wifi on :)

security on wifi isn't so much like a firewall (blocking things) but more like you're username password. It's setting so that only a few mac addresses (network card ID's) have access and that they have a password to get access as well.

Brilliant - really engaging on a deep level - would recommend it. Bit slow to start but eventually superb. The animation is excellent.
