Nope, not Mars Attacks.

Think "family sci-fi" genre. I never heard of it at the time of its release so it may not be particularly well known, though it has been on UK telly a few times over the last 15 years or so. It's the sort of thing they put on over Christmas/New Year and Easter Bank Holiday.

Well done Adam, it is indeed Flight of the Navigator.

"Were those geeks, David?", "Yes Max, those were geeks" comes from the scene where David and the spaceship are looking for directions and ask a bunch of youths in a car waiting at traffic lights.
