Word Association Game - challenges & other discussions

Well we've all obviously got too much time on our hands The word association game is rapidly approaching it's 7th page

This forum will be better suited for any questions, challenges and other points raised following on from words posted by members.

There are a few items however that have had me scratching my head (and hopefully I'm not the only one ). So as not to spoil the flow of the game I've started this separate topic so that we can admit to our ignorance but find out the answer to those nagging questions

OK, I'll start off with a couple that have been bugging me so if you know the answer or have a theory just post a follow up message (doesn't necessarily have to be from the person who originally made the association)

• BIG BIRD Albert Ross
  I'm guessing that Albert Ross was maybe the creator of Big Bird? Could anyone confirm this or let me know of any other way of getting from one to the other
  
• bum freezer
  I've got no idea at all about this one - serves me right for mentioning Kylie's bum I guess

I've also just noticed that these two are both from Ian. I'm sure that tells us something but I'm not sure what

Feel free to point fingers of derision at me or to pluck up your courage and ask for the reasoning behind the one's you didn't get

I shall hang my head in shame. Made me very embarrassed to see that but then it put a big smile on my face. It's obvious when I look at it now.

It also made me think of some favourite cryptic crossword clues. I think I'll start a new topic for them.

Nautical term for a short uniform jacket, barely reaching below the waist at the back, as distinct from a frock coat (that's the one with long tails, as seen at Nelson's Column, but still worn in Edwardian times )
Also immortalised as the boat presented to the young Gerald Durrel in "My Family and Other Animals" - BBC1 - the "Bootle Bumfreezer"

confused I certainly was, by quite a few, I stopped counting by the time I got to eight. But looking at most of them it was Barry, Ian and Adrian that had the confusing ones so surely that says a lot

The question is dare I show my ignorance, hang my head in shame, put myself on the rack to be ridiculed Well I may as well cos at least I can blame it on being blonde

A carapace is a hard bony or chitinous outer covering, such as the fused dorsal plates of a turtle or the portion of the exoskeleton covering the head and thorax of a crustacean

loud-pedal

Slang term - the loud pedal is the accelerator

faster-gorger

faster - someone who fasts. Opposite would be gorger - someone who gorges

lawyer-silk

Taken from the robes they wear. Now a general/slang(wrong word really)/ friendly? term for a lawyer

mainwaring-panthaicon (not spelt correctly I'm sure as I can't read my writing!) - luton

From "Dad's Army". Didn't watch it much - although it's constantly being repeated so I've picked bits up as I've swapped channels. I think Mr Mainwering was a delivery man. A Pantechnicon is a large delivery van, as is a Luton van

I was going to add Chin after Mental (from the Latin mentum - eg mental nerve) but thought that would be taking it too far

Going back one step, this was "gass-tarbitor-sausage eater"
Gastarbeiter=A foreign worker with official, temporary residence in Germany
Tarbitor - (tar biter!)
saussage eater=A slightly impolite term for a German (entschuldigung).

Are you not receiving the e-mail notifications at all Adrian? I guess you saw this message about the link in them that would not work, but that was fixed early in the week.

Personally I don't use them because I'm on-line pretty much all day anyway, but I'll look into it and see if there is anything amiss at this end.

Sorted via Private Message. Nothing to worry about in this case. Depending on what's happening on the Internet e-mails sometimes take a few minutes to come through rather than seeming instantaneous, but if anyone else is experiencing any kind of problems just let me know by PM or in the 'New Message Board' forum
