There is always a handful of Elises and Exiges at the Knockhill track nights. They're the ones that spend most of their time in the gravel traps !

My pennies worth on the Elise, is that it’s great fun round a track, gorgeous to look at, but a little boring on the open road.

Ask yourself which would you use it more for, racing, looking at, sitting in traffic?

Good point, Mark, but I think if I could get away with the impracticality (come on, we own Cappuccinos, we're used to having little boot space) there aren't many cars I'd rather have for the same price as an Elise.

Impractical was not an issue, nor was the boot space, nor the fact you need a climbing harness to get in, nor the blonde, nor the half hour fumbling with the roof when it rained. I really really wanted an Elise :love:

I went to a garage to buy one subject to a test drive. The Cappo is fun to drive on a daily basis on the tarmac, the Elise is underused on general roads hence not much fun, yes I was disappointed, as was the salesman!

To prove my theory, I took one round a large go-kart track and yes the huge

said it all.

My quest was similar to Jacob’s to find a car similar in price to a second hand Elise, which could replace my Cappo, to date I have not succeeded.

While my Cappo is off the road in somewhat dispute, I bought another childhood dream car within 30 minutes of knowing it was for sale, I was hooked after the test drive as it had a similar grin factor. A 1989 Porsche 944, well recommended

The Elise will remain a car to be looked at and to hire for those days around a track.

Lotus are reportedly working on a new design for a saloon... A 21st Century Lotus Cortina perhaps..

And - it appears Subaru will be bringing the Legacy GT to the UK soon.. A couple of specialists are already talking about a 350bhp version.. It will also be cheaper than an Elise which in my view is very overpriced for what you get.

Anyway - Aston Martin have just announced a sports pack for the DB9.. Manual gearbox and better suspension.... I'm off to buy the lottery ticket right now.... :lol:

You can get better road cars and better track cars for the same money, but not many that are so good at both.

If you want a bit more refinement for on the road then I think the upcoming Lotus Europa might be nice, but we'll have to wait and see!

I'd much rather have an Elise than a Legacy GT. I do actually quite like the Legacy though, if I needed to get a "sensible" car with boot space and more passenger seats it would be high on my list.

I would probably be driving an Elise now instead of a Cappuccino if it weren't for the insurance group being equal to my age :lol:

I'm in no way disappointed by the Cappuccino though, it's brilliant and even makes the drive to work entertaining, being able to nip through tight spaces and get to the back of a queue of traffic a few seconds sooner
