Thought For the Day

Postby Ken Malone » Wed Sep 21, 2005 10:44

My thought for this day was to start this topic!

The catalyst was an interview heard on Radio 4 this morning. A Muslim father was asked
to what extent he felt his children needed to be protected from the decadence of Western Society.

Surprisingly he didn't speak about the decline of our society into moral decadence, or any of the
many specific ways in which this is being manifest.

Instead he said:

Yes, my children need to be protected from a society where the only printed matter in many homes
    is the Littlewoods catalogue"
Muslim, Christian, aetheist.. doesn't matter. But when a society stops reading I think it might stop
knowing what questions to ask those in 'power'. And there leads the road to Dictatorship!

and that's my Thought For the Day.

Now that's a tough one Lindz!!! I'm going to have to give that one some serious thought :?

It is very true about reading matter though sadly. It's a rule in my class that the children can read anything (within reason) so long as they are reading!

All of those are excellent examples of texts adapted for a specific purpose though and are all welcome and used in my classroom.
