LHD Cappo in China?!?

Postby Christian van den Bo » Mon Jan 12, 2015 18:48

Is this a photoshop, or did someone actually convert a Cappo to LHD?

We have previously seen photos of a LHD Cappo from China. The photographer said that the car had been modified in a Chinese workshop. They must have built a new dash fascia.

They were not asimple Photoshop reversal, because the legend on the speedo was correct, not mirror image, as I recall. Not 100% proof, though.

Yes, we have indeed seen a photo of a LHD Cappo in China before. I think several photos were posted to this message board. IIRC, the car was red so maybe the same one as the yellow, maybe not.

The article makes a wrong assertion that "this yellow car has the steering wheel on the left so it was likely originally shipped to Western Europe ...".

All Japan Domestic Market (JDM) Cappos and European type approved Cappos were RHD! As far as we know, no Cappos left the factory with LHD. The few that were sold in continental Europe were given headlamp conversions and, I think, fitted with the JDM KPH speedo dial, but not converted to LHD. Marcel Spoelstra is the expert and may well know of other differences.

There are two tell-tale signs that this yellow Cappo was a JDM model :

  • The indicators in the front bumper are solid orange - a split indicator/sidelight unit was required to meet the European spec
  • The indicator repeater in the front wing is the larger, flatter type, not the raised "bubble" required to meet the European spec.

Hardly proof, but two very good indications of JDM.
