Help needed from Aussie members...

Postby Chris da Silva » Mon Aug 06, 2012 10:03

Are there any SCORE members in Australia who are reading this? If there are, then I need your help urgently….

I want to import a Cappo from Japan but can’t do so unless there is a RAWS who will prepare the car for me!

Up till a few years ago, Cappos could be brought in because there was a RAWS who did that…that is, until the new SEVS ruling was introduced (2004?) which prevented that from happening! From scouring the net, I found that the only RAWS which listed the Cappo went out of business because the car could no longer be imported!

But now that the Cappo has been included on the SEVS list, it can once again be brought into Australia. And the help I seek is this:

Does anyone know who the RAWS fella is, the fella who prepared the Cappo in the pre-SEVS days? (Maybe he is now operating under another Company name.)

Alternatively, is there a RAWS in your neck of the woods who will take on the Cappo?

Thnx if you can help.

Hi Chris,

I don't want to rain on your parade of importing a cappo, but I don't see it on the SEVS list. I have read your other posts so where you successful in getting it added to the SEVS? As that would be awesome. But as far as I am aware it is only the start of the horror of trying to get a Cappo imported. I looked at trying to get an Autozam AZ-1 in before I settled on buying a cappo here in Aus. Apart from trying to get it on the SEVS scheme. I believe the first one imported has to go through quite a rigorous set of ADR/engineering and compliance, to the tune of something like $20,000-$40,000. Once this has been done, each cappo will have to be individual complied to aussie rules (side intrusion bars, infomation stickers for tyres, labels inside fuel cap etc). One import company to talk to on this are http://www.j-spec.com.au/ they are a specialist RAW/SEVS importer for loads of cars, and they explained the situation to me for trying to get an AZ-1.

Are you completely set on importing one or a particular one? Currently on car sales, there appears to be a completely stock RED 95 cappo for sale here in Melbourne. It would be far less hassle, and you can have it immediately: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/deta ... rt=default

If you think trying to import one from Japan will be cheaper, the best price of one landed in AUS from J-Spec (not including the first set of ADR/Compliance costs) are about $7000-9000 before compliance costs ( http://www.j-spec.com.au/dealer/1992-Su ... 29932.html ) plus compliance on top of that, well probably end up looking at $15k all said and done.

If you want I could take a look at this Cappo in VIC for you, gives me an excuse to go and look at it, and compare it to mine:

Hi Chris,

I have done a little more digging, Alex kindly linked me to the SEVS approval, but as I thought this is only the tip of the iceberg. This page on j-spec http://www.j-spec.com.au/info/SEVS explains the process in detail. A RAW workshop has to make an evidence package, detailed what has to be done to make the car comply with ADR, it has a list of what has to be done for a Toyota of similar age to a Cappo.

Cheers,

Hi Caswal.

Many thnx for your 2 messages. The Cappo is on the SEVS list; but it was put in the wrong place! (Someone in Canberra is having trouble with placing things in alphabetical order...!) You can check it out for yourself - it's a few entries away from where you found the Suzuki Carry! I've already forwarded Ian Linden a set of the SEVS-approved documents for the Club's records!

As the Cappo is considered a low-volume production car, it is exempt from the usual rulings usually associated with full-volume vehicles. Some examples of low volume cars are TVR, Morgan and Pagani.

I'm looking into another possibility for importing a Cappo from Japan; and will know more in a couple of weeks' time. Will keep you posted.

As far as I know, Cappos already here in Oz are generally EA11's; but there is a wider choice of variants to be had from Japan plus a greater selection of colours too. But thnx heaps for offering to check out the car from Melbourne - that's very kind of you. :) I would very much like to meet up some time if you're in WA; or vice versa.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris,

I am pretty sure that the low-volume production car makes it exempt only from the crash test requirements, and it will still need to have an evidence pack made for it.
I made an inquiry to j-spec asking how much on average an evidence package costs, and that it costs around $10k for a car the age of the cappo.

But if I am wrong, then I am all ears, as I would love to get an AZ-1 into Australia.

Hi Caswal

I'm going to get as many details as I can about bringing in a Cappo from Japan. That would not only help me, but anyone else who would like one too! I'm trying to establish a Cappo following here in WA (under SCORE's banner) because they are admittedly a little thin on the ground and many people don't know what it is as they've never been officially brought into Australia. My guess is that there is barely a handful of these great machines here in Perth; but no-one ever sees them!

The fella who's letting me have that info is away on a camping holiday and won't be back until a week this Sunday. So I'm just biding my time for now.

If all goes well, and I can bring in a Cappo and get it road-registered, you may have to travel to WA to get similar approval for the AZ-1from the same guy ...

But let me sort mine out first and I'll get back to you.

Cheers

Chris

(PS: I hope you found the Cappo's entry in the SEVS list ...)
